Gogglebox stars, Pete and Sophie Sandiford, doled out scratching criticism of Phillip Schofield as he stars in the Channel 5 show Cast Away.
The disgraced TV star was forced to leave the ITV show This Morning after news of an ‘unwise but not illegal’ affair with a younger colleague broke in May 2023 and as rumours about an alleged feud with co-star Holly Willoughby swirled.
Since then the 62-year-old presenter has stayed away from the spotlight, aside from the occasional social media post, until now.
This month he launched a new series on Channel 5, Cast Away, in which he spends 10 days marooned on a deserted island with one chance to tell his side of the story.
So far he has not had a great reception, and even hit back against critics of the show in a recent Instagram story.
And it seems two of his sceptics include Gogglebox sibling duo Pete and Sophie who made their feelings about exactly where the fault lies perfectly clear on last night’s Channel 4 episode of Gogglebox.
The pair were shown a clip of Phillip on the show saying: ‘When you throw someone under the bus, you gotta have a really bloody good reason to do it.’
Sophie was quick to pitch in. ‘You created the bus and then put your foot down on it,’ she said to which Pete laughed and quickly offered his agreement.
‘You created, drove and threw yourself under the bus,’ he doubled down.
As Sophie shrugged and said ‘so…’ Pete blithely quipped: ‘Who’s to blame?’
Gogglebox fans were in agreement with Pete and Sophie as they posted their own takes on social media.
‘You get cancelled because you do stuff that isn’t right. It may not be illegal, but it’s wrong. No one else did it other than Phillip himself. No one it for him. He wasn’t thrown under a bus. He put himself in front of a bus if anything,’ @imtherealanon wrote on X.
‘I avoided that chuffing Phillip Schofield self indulgence show and I should’ve realised that it’d be on here!’ @southerncazza shared.
The third and final episode of his short-lived return to the screen aired last night, which also included a scene of him butt naked.
After the episode, he took to Instagram to respond to fans. ‘‘Thank you for your incredible support, l’ve been shown hundreds of lovely messages which are very important to me. I’m so proud of the shows. Obvs the haters Can …… kiss my a*** X,’ he wrote on his story.
The show is described as an ‘an authentic and intense physical and mental challenge.’
Each episode begins with Phillip telling viewers: ‘In the last 18 months, my life has totally unravelled. I locked myself away from the outsideworld. But now I want to see if the ultimate isolation can finally set me free.’
However, he has faced criticism for his lack of self-awareness and constant pointing of gingers to various ex-colleagues rather than taking accountability for his own behavior.
And he has further distanced himself from ITV and his network as he concluded one episode by throwing a list of names of all who wronged him into a fire.
His former colleagues have made their feelings towards the entire publicity stunt crystal clear.
One moment sees Phillip and his family making a dig at Holly’s viral ‘are you okay’ moment to the This Morning audience after Phillip exited the show.
Holly has adamantly ignored the existence of the show and took to Instagram to show her support for EastEnders star Tamzin Outhwaite’s new play instead of tuning into Cast Away on Monday night.
Meanwhile, GMB presenter Eammon Holmes – who has had a longtime alleged feud with Phillip – said he was ‘absolutely addicted to fame’.
Although some high-profile figures have come to his defence including Jeremy Clarkson, Lorraine Kelly and Allison Hammond.
All three episodes of Cast Away are now streaming on Channel 5.
